FLORENCIE BIENÁLE
6-15 October 2017, Firenze, Fortezza da Basso, Italy
We are pleased to invite you to be a member of the International Selection Committee (C.I.S.) of the XIth edition of the Florence Biennale, the international contemporary art biennial that will be held in Florence, at the Fortezza da Basso, from 6 to 15 October 2017.
Since twenty years the Florence Biennale has been gathering artists from around the world in the ‘cradle of the Renaissance’ to participate to a contemporary art event that every two years has been attended not only by those who make art, but also by hundreds of people who teach, learn, promote, market, collect or otherwise consume, and enjoy art.
Through the theme of its XIth edition, ‘eARTh: Creativity & Sustainability’, the Florence Biennale aims at contributing to envision a future in which creativity and sustainability are inspiring principles of an artistic and cultural ‘ecosystem’ within a world that is respectful of nature and life forms on Earth. In this perspective cultural diversity and biodiversity do not exist in separate and parallel realms, but are part of a kind of co-evolutionary process that needs to be preserved and nurtured. Artists as well as creative and cultural industries, including therein museums, art galleries, artist-run societies, schools, publishers, and other organisations, can play a key role in the realisation of such a process.
The artists participating in the XIth Florence Biennale will compete for the ‘Lorenzo il Magnifico’ Award in twelve categories, respectively – Drawing and calligraphy, painting, mixed media, sculpture, ceramic art, jewellery art, textile art, photography, digital art, video, installation art, and performance art. Along with the artworks of participating artists with different cultural backgrounds and at different career stages, special projects by a few guest artists of honour will be presented. Special events will also be set up to show the works by the guest artists who will receive the ‘Lorenzo il Magnifico’ Lifetime Achievement Award for having entwined creativity and sustainability as principles inspiring their work. They will join other renowned artists who received that award in the past editions, for instance David Hockney, Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Richard Anuskiewicz, Gilbert & George, Marina Abramović, Shu Yong, José Luis Cuevas, Giampaolo Talani, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Anish Kapoor, and Marta Minujín.
More details about the XIth Florence Biennale will soon be disclosed and news will be released also as updates posted in our official web site, www.florencebiennale.org. In the meantime would you kindly examine the documentation enclosed hereto, which includes information about how to become a member of our International Selection Committee. For any further information and to communicate your eventual interest please do not hesitate to contact our Organising Secretariat.
